Transforming Container Recovery in Australia with Innovative DRS Technology

A digital foundation for next-generation recycling infrastructure

testifier
It's all about removing the barriers for people to recycle. We wanted to make it as easy as possible so we could increase the amount of containers being recycled, and stop them ending up in landfill or waterways. It's just like Uber – you use the app to schedule a pickup, and we come to your house to collect your containers.

Our Approach

As Australia’s state-led container deposit schemes expanded, there was a growing need for convenient, user-friendly solutions to encourage public participation in recycling programs. Administered by government-appointed Scheme Coordinators and environmental authorities, these programs imposed new requirements around digital traceability, container-level accountability, and refund transparency. Traditional return points often posed challenges such as limited accessibility, time-consuming processes, and inconsistent user experiences.

LT3 DRS played a pivotal role in developing and deploying the ReCollect platform - a national, mobile-first solution designed to simplify recycling through scheduled container pickups, transparent digital refunds, and charitable donation options. The app enables residents and businesses to arrange pickups directly from their locations while supporting backend workflows for drivers, clerks, and administrators. To maximize accessibility, ReCollect also supports technology-less drop-offs, where labeled bags can be deposited at designated locations - no smartphone required. This inclusive model maintains full traceability while helping local operators expand their reach with minimal technical barriers.

The Result

Since deploying LT3’s DRS platform, ReCollect has significantly enhanced the recycling landscape in Australia. The platform has facilitated the collection of millions of containers, contributing to increased recycling rates and reduced environmental impact. Users benefit from the convenience of at-home pickups, with refunds processed swiftly through direct deposits or donations to over 200 partnered charities. The transparency of the process, including detailed counts of collected items, has built trust and encouraged repeat participation. Furthermore, ReCollect's scalable infrastructure has allowed for expansion into multiple regions, supporting both residential and commercial clients, and reinforcing Australia's commitment to a circular economy.
